Hi! I am a ‘reverse expat,’ an Istanbul native who moved to the United States to live, study (Ph.D., Brown University, RI) and work there as an academic and community leader for fifteen years, and recently returned to Turkey with my family. I’m married to my college sweetheart from Bogazici Univ. and we are the lucky parents of Berk (8) and Can (3), raised our version of Attachment Parenting.
In the States, my doctoral and personal activist work was mostly in the fields of Gender Studies, positive parenting, non-violent communication, bilingual literacy, identity politics, mindfulness and peace education through storytelling. After my PhD at Brown, during my second pregnancy, I received my Yoga-Meditation teacher certification and also completed work in Positive Psychology at Harvard University and UC Berkeley.
Immediately after we arrived in Turkey in Fall 2014, I launched, “ZenWorld International,” a bilingual coaching and education platform for both Turkish and expat families worldwide. In 2015, I also received my international accreditation as Founder of Attachment Parenting International, Turkiye/Turkey, a nonprofit community service initiative that I am currently leading in Turkey.
I am thrilled to support the Joimove movement as music and dance both have a very special, genuinely empowering role in both my birthing and parenting…I actually danced through the birth of both my babies! As we were awaiting my youngest son Can’s arrival, I felt the urge to take it up a notch and bellydanced through my entire labor…with my doula and husband accompanying me. Joyful Birth at its best….that is a whole other story:)
